The past weeks have undoubtedly been the most extraordinary we have experienced. At the beginning of March, no one could have imagined that within days the worst crisis since the Second World War would break out. Our entire lives came to a virtual standstill — and gastronomy and hospitality, the areas closest to us as a gourmet and travel magazine, were among the hardest hit. Even now it is not clear when Austria's restaurants and hotels will again welcome guests as freely as seemed perfectly normal just weeks ago. This is an unprecedented crisis for Austria's entrepreneurs, and there is reason to fear not all will emerge economically unscathed. But we are also certain: Austria's gastronomy and hospitality sector is strong, flexible and creative. It will not only return to its former greatness, but emerge strengthened from this experience. Just as the Renaissance brought a flowering of creativity and prosperity after the medieval plague, the Covid crisis will soon be followed by a time of fresh beginnings and positive reinvention. And we will appreciate more than ever how valuable and fulfilling it is to enjoy life — the sun on our skin, good food and a glass of wine, or the company of dear people.
