Lucky indeed is anyone who has yet to develop an allergy to crustaceans, oysters, lobster and the like. Given the antibiotic additives used in shrimp and salmon farming, allergic reactions are becoming increasingly common — which makes seeking out top quality all the more important. The first FALSTAFF issue of the year is dedicated to this wonderful harvest from the sea. The 2015 vintage in Italy was simply fantastic, particularly in Tuscany. Robert Parker awarded one of his rare 100-point scores with great enthusiasm to the Solaia 2015, whose market price is now approaching €300. The Sassicaia 2015 is no less remarkable: we gave it 99 points and a special portrait in our 'World Champions' series. Sassicaia was the first Vino da Tavola of real stature — it carried that humble designation because it broke every DOCG rule of its time, and was the first great Italian wine to generate record prices through a legendary strategy of scarcity. Everyone talks about Singapore, London or New York. But what about Moscow? We went there, took a fresh look around and experienced true Russian wonders. The city on the Moskva is turning into a genuine boom town. Superb cuisine, the finest shops and a remarkably low ruble should motivate many a travel-hungry visitor to return to Russia's capital. For now we are still enjoying winter — and, whatever the weeks ahead bring, the start of 2019. It should be a good year. Our motto for the year: Carpe diem.
