We are delighted to present the 28th edition of this guide, in which you will find more great wines across all local varietals and categories than ever before. The past year has undoubtedly been challenging again for Austrian winegrowers. The geopolitical situation has made the market more unstable, and production costs have risen in all areas. Prices for labour, energy and all raw materials have soared, and this has had a direct impact on wine prices. The ongoing in"ation is forcing many households to cut back, and this is being felt in the retail and hospitality sectors. Fortunately, consumers are aware of the quality of Austrian wines and remain loyal to them. The bottom line is clear: Austrian wines can still compete effectively in the global market thanks to their good value for money. However, Austria is also feeling the effects of the current market trends and had to accept a certain decline in exports last year due to the lower global wine consumption, which is also a result of the uncertainty caused by the global crises and the dampened mood among consumers. What had already become apparent has now been con!rmed by the !gures from Statistics Austria: after eight years of growth, Austria‘s wine exports fell slightly in 2024. Due to the difficult global market situation, the export value fell by 6% to 233.3 million euros and the export volume by 1.7% to 64.2 million litres. In the long term, however, the trend is clearly pointing upwards: since the last export decline in 2015, Austria‘s wine exports have increased by almost 90 million euros (+62.7%). By the end of 2024, it had already become apparent that Austria‘s wine exports would suffer a setback for the first time in a long time (ÖWM reported). The official figures from Statistics Austria are now available: Austria exported a total of 64.2 million litres of wine worth 233.3 million euros last year. This means that the export volume fell by 1.7% compared to 2023 and the export value by 6.0%. Less bottled Austrian wine was exported in 2024, not just to Germany but overall: There was a drop of 5.1% in volume and 6.3% in value. Bottled red wines were particularly affected, with 12.5% less volume and 14.4% less value. By contrast, exports of wines in tanks increased by 16.1%, albeit at a lower price - the export value of tank wines fell by 1.4%. In Germany, the export value fell by 13.6% to 98.8 million euros due to the higher proportion of inexpensive tank wines. Nevertheless, Germany remains by far the most important export market for Austria: 60.2% of all exported wines go to Germany and generate 42.3% of the total export value. Switzerland, still the second most important export country in 2023, recorded painful losses in 2024. The volume exported fell by a third (33.1%), the export value by 18.2%, and the lower demand for red wine impacted Austria‘s export balance. The USA took second place to Switzerland in 2024 with an 8.5% share of the total export value. After falling in 2023, the volume of exports to the United States rose again last year by 6.5% and the export value by 6.2%. A trend that is unlikely to continue, as the Trump administration has clearly called into question the USA‘s reputation as the world‘s largest wine importer with its tariff threats. As in previous years, Canada and the Nordic monopoly markets (Norway, Sweden, Finland) also performed better. The volume exported to Canada rose by 15.1% and the export value by 12.1%. Canada thus climbed further up the list of Austria‘s most important export markets. The Czech Republic saw particularly strong growth in 2024, with demand for wine from Austria rising sharply by 80% in this neighboring country. So the wine glass is either half full or half empty, depending on your point of view. In any case, the quality of Austrian wines gives reason to hope for a positive trend reversal in the near future. I would like to take this opportunity to express my special thanks to all the contributors to this 28th edition, and to all the wineries that have entrusted us with their wines during this special period. It is their skill and admirable work that makes this guide possible. And so that our winemakers can continue to produce the best possible wines in the future for their customers, they must receive a worthy price for their excellent products. So let‘s continue to enjoy our wines at a fair price.
